New unveils synchronous reluctance motor with water-jacket cooling for ultra-premium energy efficiency

Elin Motoren

  • Highest energy efficiency according to IE5 class for electric motors up to 500kW
  • Improved power density and compactness due to water-jacket cooling system
  • Precisely optimized with a variable frequency drive for maximum performance reliability

ELIN Motoren, a leading manufacturer for customized electric motors and generators, announces the launch of its first synchronous reluctance motor with water-jacked cooling. Designed with the latest advancements in efficiency and sustainability, the electric motor redefines standards in the plastics and recycling industries.

Companies in plastics processing and recycling face demanding efficiency requirements like IE4, and IE5 for their plants. ELIN Motoren addresses these challenges with its new synchronous reluctance motor. Featuring water-jacket cooling and a fine-tuning with a variable frequency drive, this motor offers unparalleled cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability.

The reluctance motor excels in ultra-premium efficiency, meeting IE4 and IE5 standards for up to 500kW motors - a feat rarely achieved by conventional asynchronous technology. This innovation stems from an advanced rotor sheet design, developed collaboratively with the University of Darmstadt and one customer leading in the plastics industry. The proven cooperation between ELIN Motoren and the frequency inverter manufacturer Schneider Electric will also be continued with the reluctance motor technology.

“We are thrilled to introduce the synchronous reluctance motor to the plastics and recycling industries. This motor addresses the industry's demand for higher efficiency and lower operational costs while supporting sustainability goals. Our customers can achieve significant energy savings and operational reliability, crucial for their competitive edge,” says Christoph Gögele, Director Business Division Plastics and Mining at ELIN Motoren.

A key feature of the synchronous reluctance motor is its water-jacket cooling system, which provides superior power density and compactness compared to air-cooled alternatives. Drawing on its extensive experience with water-jacket cooling in asynchronous motors, ELIN Motoren is using this know-how for the synchronous reluctance motors.

The reluctance motor ensures significant economic and environmental benefits. Its high energy efficiency reduces energy costs, while lower rotor heating decreases maintenance requirements, minimizing expenses for bearings, seals, and other components. From a sustainability perspective, the design excludes rare earth elements and permanent magnets, eliminating risks associated with supply chain disruptions and price volatility of these materials.
